| For New Owners THE best book for new PWD owners is The Portuguese Water Dog, A Guide for the New Owner
Written and illustrated by a long time PWD owner it's both a good introduction to raising a dog, and has tips for dealing with the characteristics that make PWDs unique.
While you are waiting for your new puppy to arrive you can play with this stuffed one. Tips for new owners. - Start training good habits. No puppy is too young to learn (and no dog is too old.) Here are some of our favorite books for every dog owner.
- Start grooming early. Even if your puppy doesn't seem to need it, get them use to standing quietly while you brush and comb them. Handle their feet and gradually introduce them to the noise of a blow dryer. You'll want a copy of our grooming chart. It will help you, or your groomer, get that PWD look.
- Find a good puppy or obedience class. Your puppy knows that someone has to be in charge in every house, and if you don't decide it's you - it will be the dog, PWDs respond very well to positive training methods. We've had lots of success with clicker training (aka operant conditioning, used at Sea World) You can find the name of a positive trainer near you at www.apdt.com (The Association of Pet Dog Trainers.)
